The invention relates to a method and apparatus for controlling optical characteristic, especially brightness, and forming pattern type surface in wide fiber material machine and wide fiber material after-processing equipment. In the method, the surface (1; 60) of the wide fiber material is processed by at least one of the wide fiber material machine and wide fiber material after-processing equipment; multiple scores or grooves (4-6) are formed on the surface of the wide fiber material; the patterns composed by the scores and grooves are copied to the to-be-processed surface of the wide fibermaterial basically; thus, the expected optical effect is achieved. The apparatus comprises multiple processing units (2; 3; 62; 70) by which scores or grooves (4-6) can be formed on the processed surface (1; 60) of the wide fiber material making the scores or grooves (4-6) in expected directions relative to processing direction of the wide fiber producing equipment and after-processing equipment.
