Provided is a gasification apparatus wherein gasification is carried out through the supply of a solid fuel, such as coal, in a dry state to a gasification furnace of a gas current layer mode, which can recover the char discharged from the gasification furnace and can supply it again to the gasification furnace with no use of a lock hopper and without forming a slurry. The char discharged to the outside of the furnace together with a gas (53) formed in a gasification furnace is recovered by the contact with water in a gas cooler (9), is de-watered by a dewatering machine (10) and then is charged into a mill (2) or a raw coal banker (1). When it is charged into the raw coal banker (1), it is preferably further dried by a dryer (14) after being de-watered. The above apparatus allows the re-supply of a mixture of a recovered char and water to the gasification furnace with the use of no lock hopper or no dry feeder. The char is supplied to the gasification furnace after de-watering, preferably after further drying, which does not bring about the supply of much amount of water to the gasification furnace, and thus results in the prevention of the lowering of the temperature of the gasification furnace, leading to the improvement in the efficiency of the transformation to a gas.
