The combination of narrowband applications with broadband transport may be enabled with a tri-level nodal communications architecture including multiple call control nodes, multiple connection controlnodes and one or more intermediates node for interworking between the call control nodes and connection control nodes, in which the intermediate nodes are controlled by all of the call control nodes.In certain embodiments, the identity of the call control node is transmitted to the intermediate node with each message to differentiate between the multiple call control nodes. In addition, each resource e.g., port managed by the intermediate node has a call control node identity associated therewith. In further embodiments, a logical port is used to support connections between call control nodes sharing the same intermediate node. The logical port represents a logical E 1 path between the two call control nodes.
